Two IIT Graduates, 30 Days Left in the Bank, and a Fan That Would Save India Billions in Electricity: The Atomberg Story

In 2019, Sibabrata Das sat in Mumbai with one thought running on repeat.

"Thirty days were all we had."

Seven years of building. Hundreds of rejected funding pitches across every venture capital firm in India and abroad. Friends and well-wishers who had long advised both founders to simply take up jobs. And now, with Atomberg Technologies on the verge of shutting down, the co-founder of one of India's most ambitious engineering startups had exactly one month to change the story.

What happened next — and in the years before and after — is one of Indian entrepreneurship's most quietly extraordinary tales. Not about apps or algorithms, but about motors, electricity bills, and the stubborn conviction that the most ubiquitous appliance in 300 million Indian homes deserved to be completely reimagined.


The Problem Nobody Else Thought Was Worth Solving

Manoj Meena graduated from IIT Bombay in 2011 as an electrical engineer specialising in control systems and robotics. He chose to stay back on campus and start experimenting rather than take a corporate job. On February 28, 2012, Atomberg Technologies was formally incorporated — incubated at the Society for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (SINE) at IIT Bombay. His hostel-mate Sibabrata Das, who had his own string of failed student ventures behind him, joined as co-founder in 2013.

For the first three years, Atomberg survived by doing technical consulting for DRDO, BARC, ISRO, and IIT Bombay. It kept the lights on — but it was not the mission.

The defining insight came from a simple, uncomfortable statistic: ceiling fans consume nearly 20% of an Indian household's electricity spend. And in an industry that had existed since the 1930s — dominated by Crompton, Bajaj, Havells, and Orient — virtually nothing had changed. The technology inside the average Indian ceiling fan was decades old. The motors were inefficient. The energy waste was enormous.

Nobody in the industry seemed to think this was worth fixing.

Manoj Meena thought otherwise.


April 2015: The Prototype That Started Everything

Working from a small R&D setup in Navi Mumbai, Meena, Das, and a small team of engineers completed the first prototype of a BLDC (Brushless DC Motor) ceiling fan in April 2015.

The numbers were stark. A conventional induction motor ceiling fan consumes 75 to 80 watts. The Atomberg BLDC fan ran on just 28 watts — delivering up to 65% energy savings with no compromise on airflow or performance. The technology behind it was Atomberg's own proprietary innovation: the AtomSENSE algorithm — a sensorless motor-control system that measured back EMF and coil inductance in real time, enabling optimised power consumption and later, full IoT connectivity via app, voice, and remote.

The prototype's success enabled a manufacturing plant in Navi Mumbai to be set up. In 2015, Gorilla — India's first commercially available BLDC ceiling fan — was launched.


Institutions First, Households Next

Atomberg's earliest customers were not households — they were institutions. The company targeted clients with high fan usage: colleges, hospitals, and large commercial spaces. Early orders came from the Tata Group, Infosys, Reliance, Indian Railways, and IITs. A particularly strong early product-market fit emerged in Gujarat's Saurashtra region, where the ceramics industry used fans in large quantities to dry ceramic pots — and where the electricity savings were immediately measurable and meaningful.

In April 2016, Atomberg was producing 30 fans per day. By April 2018, it had grown to 500 fans per day.

In 2016, Atomberg made the shift from B2B to B2C — and chose to sell primarily online. The move invited immediate scepticism. "Are fans bought online? Can you sell them online?" was the consistent pushback — from investors, from industry veterans, and even from well-meaning peers. Between 2016 and 2018, hundreds of funding pitches were rejected. Nobody, it seemed, believed in the story of two engineers trying to disrupt a ₹10,000 crore market owned by companies with decades of distribution muscle.


Thirty Days and the Breakthrough

By 2019, Atomberg had run out of money. Thirty days remained.

It was the institutional buyers, early online customers, and a growing base of energy-conscious consumers who had experienced the fans first-hand that kept the story alive long enough for the funding to arrive. In 2018, Atomberg closed its Series A led by A91 Partners. In December 2020, it raised ₹70 crore in a follow-on round. And in 2023, Temasek and Steadview Capital led an $86 million Series C — one of the largest rounds ever raised by an Indian home appliances startup — to fund manufacturing scale-up, R&D expansion, and offline retail growth to over 30,000 stores.


The Marketing Strategy: Provocation, Cricket, and a Question That Stuck

Atomberg's consumer marketing found its clearest expression in the #WhyNot campaign — a digital-first brand push that challenged the unquestioned assumptions consumers held about everyday home appliances. Why not a fan that saves electricity and pays for itself within 12 to 18 months? It was not a tagline — it was a reframe.

In early 2022, Atomberg made its most visible marketing move: signing a sponsorship deal with the BCCI as an official sponsor for ₹40.8 crore — giving the brand cricket-scale mass-market visibility, reaching audiences that digital media alone could not access.

The strategy was layered and deliberate: build B2B credibility with institutional giants first, prove the product on the ground, go D2C online to bypass traditional distributor gatekeepers, then use the #WhyNot campaign for brand identity, and finally deploy cricket as a national amplifier. Each phase reinforced the next.


The Impact That Numbers Cannot Contain

The truest measure of Atomberg's story is not in revenue — it is in watts saved.

Today, 15 million Atomberg BLDC fans are installed across India, saving 2.5 billion units of electricity annually — equivalent to the output of a 2 GW solar plant that would cost approximately ₹10,000 crore to build. Atomberg has won the National Energy Conservation Award (NECA) three consecutive times, presented by the President of India in the fan category.

The company received the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation's Global Cleantech Innovation Award 2017 in the energy efficiency category, the National Entrepreneurship Award 2017 from the Union Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, and both founders were named to Forbes 30 Under 30 India and Asia lists in 2018. The company also received the Champions of Change recognition from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and NITI Aayog.

By FY2024, Atomberg reported revenue of ₹848 crore — a 31% increase year-on-year — and crossed the ₹1,000 crore revenue milestone by 2025.


Beyond Fans: Building a Full-Stack Smart Home Brand

Atomberg has never been a ceiling fan company. It is a motor and energy efficiency company that started with ceiling fans.

The product range has expanded steadily into mixer grinders, water heaters, smart locks, and water purifiers. In 2026, Atomberg introduced an indigenously designed compressor for air conditioners — a technology historically imported — at ACREX Mumbai, powered by its flagship BLDC motor technology. A separate subsidiary, Atomberg Innovation, now focuses on advanced motors, drives, and drone propulsion systems, entering a space where most components are currently imported.

Manoj Meena has transitioned to Chairman & MD of Atomberg Technologies and CEO of Atomberg Innovation, while Sibabrata Das leads the consumer business as CEO of Atomberg Technologies.


The Fan That Refused to Stay Still

India sells approximately 45 to 50 million fans a year. The BLDC segment Atomberg pioneered currently holds around 20% penetration and is growing at over 30% CAGR.

Atomberg did not invent the ceiling fan. It invented the reason to care about it again — by asking the one question the entire industry had stopped asking: Why not better?

Two IIT graduates who were called failures, who ran out of money with thirty days to spare, and who were told that nobody buys fans online, built a company that has saved the electricity equivalent of a 2 GW solar plant from Indian homes — one BLDC motor at a time.

The philosophy that drives everything Atomberg makes is three words: Do More with Less.

It turns out, that is also a precise description of the founders themselves.
