BKT’s Global Brand Strategy in Off-Highway Tyres

Industry & Competitive Context

Off-highway tyres (OHT) serve agricultural, construction, mining, industrial, port, gardening and all-terrain vehicle applications, according to BKT’s own sponsorship site. The buyer is usually an equipment owner or operator, such as a farmer or contractor, rather than a mass consumer. That raises a structural marketing question for any OHT maker: how do you build a brand with end users in a business-to-business category?

BKT (Balkrishna Industries Limited) competes in this segment as a share-gainer, not an incumbent leader. Credible sources put its global share in the single digits:

  • CRISIL (2021): international OHT share had risen steadily to 6–7%, helped by OEM relationships and a distribution network in more than 160 countries.

  • Irish Farmers Journal interview: BKT estimated its European share at close to 20% and its global share at about 6%, with a target of 10%.

  • Autocar Professional (November 2025): the report links the company’s new capex plan to an 8% global OHT share. It does not make clear whether this is a target or a current figure, so this case does not rely on it.

A historic Outlook Business feature named Bridgestone, Michelin and Titan International as global competitors, but that is dated and does not describe today’s rankings.

BKT’s revenue is export-led. CRISIL reported that in fiscal 2020 about 80% of revenue came from exports, with Europe and America accounting for 51% and 12% respectively. A broker report from ICICI Securities noted a channel mix of about 70% replacement (the OEM share figure is truncated in the retrieved text). Replacement sales are decided by dealers and end users, which matters for the brand logic described below.

Brand Situation Prior to the Campaign

Sources differ on the company’s origins. Autocar Professional dates the company to 1987. Outlook Business and Tire Review place its entry into off-highway tyres in 1995. The Irish Farmers Journal says the family first made two- and three-wheeler tyres for India, then shifted to international OHT when that market grew crowded. The founding date is unresolved in public sources, but the pivot to OHT is consistently reported.

By 2015, BKT’s investor materials described it as a leading OHT exporter with over 2,200 SKUs and positioned its Bhuj plant as a route to potentially doubling its global market share. Autocar Professional lists CASE, John Deere, JCB, CAT and TAFE among its customers. The picture before the sports strategy is a manufacturer with broad range, export reach and OEM relationships.

Strategic Objective

The stated objectives come from management statements and are consistent across years:

  • Brand awareness. Lucia Salmaso, then BKT Europe’s managing director, called the French league sponsorship a fit with the growth strategy for the company’s brand awareness.

  • Proximity to end users. For the French league, she said the choice allowed BKT to reach every province and get closer to farmers.

  • Share growth. The Irish Farmers Journal interview records a target of 10% global market share.

A later objective is documented in the FY26 results coverage. BKT announced a “BKT 2.0” strategy targeting about Rs 23,000 crore of revenue by FY30, a 17 per cent compound annual growth rate. It also introduced a new brand architecture: “BKT Tyres” for OHT and on-highway businesses and “BKT Carbon” for carbon black.

Campaign Architecture & Execution

BKT’s brand building was not a single campaign. It was a layered sponsorship architecture with three documented layers.

Layer 1: title sponsorship of second-tier European football.

  • Italy. In 2018 BKT became title sponsor of Serie B for three seasons, and the league was renamed Serie BKT. Trade press described it as BKT’s first foray into international sports sponsorship. The deal was renewed for 2021–2024 and again for 2024–2028.

  • France. In September 2018 BKT became naming partner of the Coupe de la Ligue for six seasons. When that competition was discontinued, BKT took the title rights to Ligue 2 in an agreement whose financial terms were not disclosed. The league was renamed Ligue 2 BKT from 2020/21.

  • Reported cost. SportBusiness reported that BKT’s investment in the Coupe de la Ligue title deal was €18m. This figure comes from the trade outlet, not from BKT or the league. Terms of the other deals are not public.

Layer 2: a widening global sports portfolio. Autocar Professional lists BKT’s other sponsorships as Monster Jam, LaLiga, EuroLeague Basketball, the Rugby World Cup and the United Rugby Championship. Inside World Football adds the BKT World Curling Championship in Canada and the BKT EuroCup. In Australia, BKT was Official Off-Highway Tyre Partner of the KFC Big Bash League.

Layer 3: Indian cricket and the consumer brand. BKT has been Official Tyre Partner to several IPL teams. A 2023 announcement covered seven teams, and Sportsmint noted a fourth consecutive season with five of them. For 2026, BKT announced the Official Tyre Partner role for eight of the ten teams, adding Royal Challengers Bengaluru. This time the partner was named as BKT’s consumer brand, “BKT Tyres”.

Activation. The documented activations are fan contests and local programmes. BKT reported that its BKT Premia contest in Italy had drawn 519,739 entries since 2020. The IPL partnerships are structured around stadium visibility, broadcast integrations, dealer activations, grassroots programmes and digital fan engagement. Sports consultancy RISE Worldwide is reported to manage BKT’s Indian partnerships, and the Serie B relationship involves the agency network Havas Play.

Positioning & Consumer Insight

The documented rationale is geographic and audience-based. It is not a brand slogan.

BKT said it chose Serie B because the league is played in cities where agriculture, its main market, is among the most developed sectors, and that it would replicate the approach in France. Salmaso described Ligue 2 as a way to reach local areas and farmers. She also said BKT knew it had made an unusual choice, particularly for a B2B brand, and that second-tier leagues are incubators for sport’s development.

The Serie B announcement tied BKT to the league on shared values. Italian press coverage of the 2018 launch reported BKT’s emphasis on passion, loyalty, willpower and tenacity in facing daily challenges. Trade coverage of the Serie B launch also noted that the partnership aimed to support young talents, football schools and stadiums in the cities where Serie B teams play.

In India, the stated rationale is cultural reach. Joint Managing Director Rajiv Poddar described cricket as one of the most influential cultural forces in India. The consumer campaign is reported to carry the tagline “Elevate Your Drive” and to feature actor Ranveer Singh.

Analytical reading. Taken together, the documented facts suggest a consistent logic. In a replacement-heavy category, the person who chooses a tyre is often the farmer or operator. Football in agricultural regions gave BKT a way to put its name in front of that person without competing in consumer advertising. The unusual part is the target: BKT chose second-tier leagues, which company statements frame as a deliberate choice. Whether this was cost-efficient relative to alternatives cannot be assessed, because costs are mostly undisclosed.

Media & Channel Strategy

The best-documented channel is television. In 2020, after two years of the French sponsorship, BKT reported that 42 per cent of its brand visibility was linked to TV. Serie B’s president said the league was visible in 56 countries, which extends the reach of the Italian deal beyond one market.

In India the plan combines broadcast and digital channels with dealer activations (see Section 4).

Business & Brand Outcomes

Brand outcomes.

  • France. A CSA Research panel found that BKT’s brand awareness reached 17 per cent among football fans after two years of title sponsorship. The research was compiled for BKT, so it is company-commissioned. Salmaso said the awareness gain had helped increase BKT’s sales in France, but gave no figures. BKT described the first two years as a test within a six-year partnership.

  • Italy. BKT reports that, in six years as title sponsor, its brand recognition among fans had grown remarkably, but the retrieved coverage gives no measured figure. The Premia entry count (above) is the only quantified fan metric.

  • Continuity as a signal. BKT renewed both title sponsorships and extended Ligue 2 to 2027–28. This shows commitment, but it is not proof of return.

Business outcomes. BKT’s FY26 results coverage reports:

  • Standalone revenue of Rs 10,656 crore, flat year on year, with net profit down 25% to Rs 1,222 crore and EBITDA margin down 252 basis points to 22.7%. (This is reported by Whalesbook; the primary source is BKT’s results filing.)

  • Record annual volumes of 317,356 MT.

  • OHT contributed about 91% of FY26 revenue, with carbon black the balance.

  • In India, domestic agricultural tyre share grew to over 20%, according to management comments on an analyst call.

Company financials reflect many factors. In FY26, coverage cites raw material inflation, supply chain disruptions and currency volatility as pressures. BKT also stopped selling into the US after a 50% import duty on Indian tyres; the US had been about 10% of prior-year volume. This case therefore makes no causal claim about brand spending and results.

Strategic Implications

Analytical reading. The following points are interpretations grounded in the documented facts above.

First, brand investment preceded the diversification, and the architecture now reflects it. The sponsorship build-out from 2018 sits ahead of the on-highway push. In February 2026 BKT launched truck-bus radial tyres and relaunched select two-wheeler tyres in India, and it plans passenger car radials. Its new brand architecture separates “BKT Tyres” from “BKT Carbon”. The IPL deals are described as part of building visibility for the consumer line. Whether the brand equity built among farmers and fans transfers to road-going consumers is untested in public data.

Second, the industry logic changes at the boundary. In OHT, BKT’s differentiation rests on range, price-performance and OEM relationships. On-highway tyres are a different competitive arena. Nuvama Research, cited by Autocar Professional, warned of high competitive intensity from established mass-market players, with EBITDA margins below 15% against BKT’s 25%. A brand strategy that worked by being a specialist may need a different logic when it competes against generalists.

Third, partnerships can substitute for brand building. On 22 October 2026, BKT and Pirelli signed agreements for a proposed 50:50 joint venture for passenger car radial tyres in India. In the interim, BKT would manufacture Pirelli-branded tyres at its Bhuj plant. Poddar framed Pirelli’s choice as recognition of BKT’s manufacturing strength and quality. The definitive JV agreement is not yet signed, and the plant’s location, investment and capacity have not been disclosed. For brand strategy, this means BKT is pairing its own brand extension with a manufacturing partnership under a premium global brand. How this interacts with the “BKT Tyres” consumer push is not yet publicly documented.

Fourth, geographic concentration is a brand risk. The sponsorship portfolio is concentrated in Europe (where BKT has its largest share) and India. The US tariff episode shows how external conditions can interrupt a market regardless of brand strength.

Discussion Questions

  1. BKT chose second-tier football leagues in agricultural regions instead of premier competitions. Using only the documented rationale, evaluate this as a segmentation and targeting decision for a B2B brand. What evidence would you need to judge whether it paid off?

  2. The only public awareness figure (17% among football fans in France) was commissioned by BKT. What are the strengths and limits of this measure as evidence of brand effectiveness, and what independent metrics would strengthen the case?

  3. The sponsorship architecture moved from European football to the IPL as BKT entered Indian consumer tyres. Does an off-highway brand’s equity transfer to a different category and customer? Argue both sides using documented facts.

  4. FY26 profit fell while volumes reached a record. Discuss why a brand-building case study should be cautious about linking sponsorship spend to financial results, and what that implies for how the board should evaluate sponsorship ROI.

  5. BKT has announced a joint venture with Pirelli while also building its own “BKT Tyres” consumer brand. Assess the strategic tension between partnering under a premium global brand and building one’s own, and recommend what BKT should monitor.
