BookMyShow Live: Building India's Experiential Entertainment Platform

Industry & Competitive Context

India's organised entertainment industry underwent a structural shift in the decade following 2014, as an expanding urban middle class, rising disposable incomes and smartphone penetration moved ticketed entertainment from a niche habit toward mainstream consumer behaviour. The live events sector in India crossed the ₹12,000 crore revenue mark in 2024, hosting over 30,000 live events across the country, and by 2025 a joint EY-Parthenon–BookMyShow report placed the market at ₹13,000 crore, with concerts, festivals, comedy tours and cultural showcases becoming high-intent environments for brand engagement; a separate estimate in the same research cycle put the broader live-events ecosystem, including immersive exhibitions, at around ₹17,000 crore in 2025. The same report found that experiential media already accounts for roughly 23% of India's media and entertainment revenues, and that 78% of Indian consumers now prefer spending on experiences rather than physical products.

Bigtree Entertainment Pvt. Ltd., founded in 1999, launched BookMyShow in 2007 and built it into one of India's leading entertainment destinations, present in over 700 towns and cities, evolving from a purely online movie-ticketing platform across 7,000-plus screens into end-to-end management of live entertainment music concerts, live performances, theatricals and sport. For close to two decades this scale translated into effective category leadership in organised ticketing.

That position faced its most direct challenge in 2024. Zomato, through its parent entity Eternal, acquired Paytm Insider for ₹2,048 crore in August 2024 and subsequently launched District, a bundled application integrating restaurant reservations, movie bookings, concert passes and sports ticketing into a single consumer interface, on the explicit behavioural thesis that the same urban consumer ordering dinner on a Friday evening is planning a live event for the weekend. Swiggy followed in December 2024 with Scenes, an extension of its Dineout going-out vertical, while Krafton-backed JetSynthesys entered with JetAlive, targeting Gen Z through a "phygital" format combining gaming IP with live experiences. An industry analysis citing a March 2023 FICCI-EY report noted that the organised live events segment had grown 20% to touch ₹8,800 crore in 2023, with BookMyShow historically holding roughly 50% of event-ticketing share against Paytm's 45% and Zomato's 2% a combined rival share of 47% once the Paytm Insider deal closed. Trade publication IQ Magazine's 2026 market report characterised the resulting dynamic plainly: BookMyShow remains the dominant player, but Zomato's acquisition of Paytm Insider and the expansion of District have created the most significant challenge to its position in years.

Brand Situation Prior to the Campaign/Division

Historically, BookMyShow's core equity was built on ticketing infrastructure and distribution reach rather than owned content or experiences. From the late 2010s the company broadened beyond cinema ticketing into live entertainment, serving as promoter and ticketing partner for international acts including Coldplay, Ed Sheeran, Justin Bieber, U2, Guns N' Roses and Travis Scott. This established BookMyShow as India's preferred rails for live entertainment transactions, but the underlying economics and much of the brand equity accrued to the touring artists and third-party promoters rather than to BookMyShow's own intellectual property.

Strategic Objective

In 2017, founder Ashish Hemrajani established BookMyShow Live as the organisation's dedicated live entertainment and experiential division. BookMyShow Live operates across the full value chain of live entertainment from talent and IP acquisition to production, promotion, partnerships and audience development. The strategic objective was to convert BookMyShow from a pure-play ticketing intermediary into a vertically integrated experiential entertainment company that co-owns and co-produces marquee properties, captures a larger share of the value chain around each event, and builds recurring, India-anchored intellectual property rather than one-off ticketing relationships with touring artists.

Campaign Architecture & Execution

BookMyShow Live's execution has centred on three parallel tracks: importing and localising global entertainment franchises, producing homegrown properties, and building a dedicated brand-partnerships vertical.

On global franchises, BookMyShow, together with Lollapalooza founder Perry Farrell, William Morris Endeavor and C3 Presents, brought Lollapalooza to Mumbai for January 28–29, 2023 the festival's first staging in Asia and its eighth country globally. BookMyShow Live was positioned as promoter and co-producer for the festival's Indian edition, and the property has since become an annual fixture: a fourth consecutive edition ran on January 24–25, 2026 at Mumbai's Mahalaxmi Racecourse, and a fifth edition was confirmed for 2027, with Linkin Park's 2026 performance recording the largest single-performance audience since the festival's 2023 debut. Other imported and co-produced properties credited to the division include U2's The Joshua Tree Tour, the NBA's debut games in India, Disney's Aladdin musical, and Cirque du Soleil BAZZAR, alongside Coldplay's Music of the Spheres World Tour, which BookMyShow Live drove in India in collaboration with global tour producer Live Nation.

On homegrown IP, the division has produced regional-origin properties such as Bandland, an inaugural rock festival in Bengaluru bringing together Indian rock acts with international legends, and in partnership with a cricket franchise rather than a music promoter The MIX, a two-day experiential festival with Mumbai Indians at Mumbai's Jio World Garden on March 21–22, 2026, combining cricket, music, immersive experiences and merchandise drops, co-produced and promoted by Mumbai Indians and BookMyShow Live. This was explicitly framed as a milestone in Mumbai Indians' evolution from a cricket team into a broader lifestyle and cultural movement, and was executed through BrandLabs, BookMyShow Live's newly launched creative-solutions vertical dedicated to building branded IPs and cultural experiences at the intersection of entertainment, technology and commerce.

Positioning & Consumer Insight

The division's positioning rests on a documented consumer insight: that live, on-ground experiences generate measurably stronger brand outcomes than passive advertising. Post-event surveys conducted among 7,450 live-event attendees, published in the March 2026 EY-Parthenon–BookMyShow report "Beyond Attention. Into Immersion," found that 59% of attendees recalled the brands they interacted with at an event, 81% felt a strong fit between the brand and the experience, and 63% said the brand enhanced their overall experience; 55% separately reported higher purchase intent after engaging with brands at events. On the demand side, the accompanying CMO survey found that more than half of brands had executed an experiential activation in the past year, and 88% of those that had invested in experiential marketing planned to continue doing so in a more structured manner.

Media & Channel Strategy

BookMyShow Live's channel strategy is not conventional media buying but brand co-creation within owned or co-produced live properties. Brands such as RuPay and Kotak Mahindra Bank have focused on access and convenience within high-demand live entertainment moments, while H&M, Budweiser 0.0 Non-Alcoholic Beer, Nivea and Vicks have invested in festival ecosystems built for self-expression, community and trial; beauty and lifestyle platform Nykaa turned an immersive environment into a discovery-led brand playground by co-curating the IP Nykaaland with BookMyShow Live, alongside further partnerships involving Visa and Diageo's Johnnie Walker. Recurring properties like Lollapalooza India also carry structured, repeatable partner mechanics: RuPay Amplified Access has run as a credit-card-linked pre-sale and experience layer across successive editions, giving partner brands predictable, ownable touchpoints inside the property rather than one-off sponsorship exposure.

Business & Brand Outcomes

The clearest publicly documented outcome is the economic scale BookMyShow Live-produced events now generate. Coldplay's two-night Music of the Spheres stadium shows in Ahmedabad in January 2025 drew over 222,000 attendees to the Narendra Modi Stadium, with more than 100,000 fans per night and tickets selling out amid platform surges as demand queued into the millions. According to the EY-Parthenon–BookMyShow report, the two Ahmedabad shows generated an estimated total economic impact of over ₹641 crore, of which ₹392 crore directly boosted the city's economy and ₹72 crore accrued to the Government of India as GST revenue; attendees travelled from over 500 cities spanning all 28 states and five union territories, and roughly 15,000 personnel were deployed across event management, security, logistics and volunteering. cms.storyboard18.com +3

A comparable, smaller-scale case was documented outside the metro circuit: Post Malone's concert in Guwahati generated an estimated economic impact of over ₹43 crore, with more than 20,000 footfalls, 53% of attendees travelling from outside Guwahati and from over 200 cities and towns across India, part of a broader report projecting a ₹700 crore economic opportunity for Assam's concert economy over the following five years. On Lollapalooza India specifically, over the first three editions, lakhs of fans gathered for more than 60 hours of live music featuring 100-plus artists, and a Live Nation survey of 2025 attendees found roughly two in three had travelled from outside Mumbai, with 98% intending to attend again; the associated Lolla Food Park has hosted over 200 F&B brands since 2023.

At the corporate level, the strategy has attracted institutional capital: in August 2026, KKR signed definitive agreements to acquire a minority stake in BookMyShow, with the investment intended to support the company's next phase of growth as it scales its live entertainment business and deepens its full-stack offering across India. The publicly disclosed rationale for the deal specifically named BookMyShow Live's portfolio Lollapalooza India, U2's The Joshua Tree Tour, the NBA's debut games in India, Disney's Aladdin, and Cirque du Soleil BAZZAR as evidence of its live-entertainment ambitions.

Strategic Implications

BookMyShow Live illustrates a distinctive route to platform differentiation in a two-sided ticketing market that has become structurally more contested since 2024. Rather than compete only on transaction convenience the axis on which District, Scenes and JetAlive are converging BookMyShow Live has pursued vertical integration into IP ownership and co-production, converting the company from a distribution layer into a stakeholder in the underlying content. This is consistent with the broader industry read offered in a 2025 sector analysis: the real long-run winners in India's live-events economy will likely be those who move beyond distribution to own content, venues and intellectual property. The KKR investment suggests institutional investors view this content-and-IP strategy, rather than ticketing share alone, as BookMyShow's durable moat against well-capitalised, dining-led entrants. The open strategic question visible in trade commentary on the District launch is whether a distribution-first challenger can replicate BookMyShow Live's IP relationships and production capability quickly enough to erode that advantage, given that competing against an incumbent ticketing giant requires investment in events IP and live-event management where a new entrant starts at a structural disadvantage.

Discussion Questions

  1. BookMyShow Live pursued vertical integration into content ownership and co-production rather than competing purely on ticketing convenience. What are the trade-offs of this strategy versus the platform-bundling approach taken by Zomato's District?

  2. The EY-Parthenon–BookMyShow research shows strong brand recall (59%) and purchase-intent lift (55%) from experiential marketing, but these are attendee-survey figures commissioned by an interested party. How should a marketing leader weigh sponsor-commissioned research when deciding on experiential media allocations?

  3. Coldplay's Ahmedabad shows generated a documented ₹641 crore economic impact for the host city. What does this suggest about how cities and state governments should evaluate infrastructure investment to attract global touring acts, and what risks does that create for cities that fail to win comparable events?

  4. BookMyShow Live's IP partnerships range from global festival franchises (Lollapalooza) to homegrown sports-lifestyle properties (The MIX with Mumbai Indians). What distinct brand-building logic does each type of property serve, and should a platform prioritise one over the other as it scales?

  5. With KKR's minority investment and intensifying competition from Zomato, Swiggy and JetSynthesys, what capabilities should BookMyShow Live prioritise over the next three to five years to defend its position as India's live-events market moves toward an estimated ₹17,000+ crore scale?
