Daikin India's Premium Brand Strategy in Residential Air Conditioning
Industry & Competitive Context
India's residential air conditioning market is large in potential and small in current penetration. ICRA describes room AC as one of the least penetrated consumer durables in India, with penetration below 10% of the total market size. ICRA attributes demand growth to urbanisation, rising living standards, weather changes and easy consumer financing. Daikin's India chief, Kanwal Jeet Jawa, told Bloomberg that about 93% of Indians still don't own an AC, and called that the company's future market. The same report says the International Energy Agency expects India to overtake the US as the world's second-largest AC market by 2036.
The competitive set is led by domestic and Korean players. Bloomberg identifies Tata Group's Voltas and South Korea's LG Electronics as Daikin's main competitors in the residential segment. Voltas stated in a press release that it sold over 2 million AC units in FY24, which it described as the highest ever by any brand in India in a financial year. Daikin is therefore competing in a category where volume leadership is held by a mass-market incumbent.
Bloomberg reports that easier online purchase and instalment payment are additional growth drivers. Jawa said in the same report that Indian consumers no longer look at cheap products and want value for money. This is an executive claim.

Brand Situation Prior to Strategic Scale-Up
Daikin's Indian history is one of a slow start followed by rapid scaling. An Ivey Publishing case summary states that Daikin India had fared poorly in the Indian market after its 2000 entry, and that Jawa, who joined in 2010, turned the subsidiary around.
ICRA documents the operating model that followed. Daikin Airconditioning India (DAIPL) initially served India through imports from Daikin Industries' facilities in Japan, Thailand and Malaysia. It began local production in 2009 with chillers, then added VRVs, HFC-32 refrigerant, high-wall split ACs, packaged ACs and Sky Air cassettes. Business Standard's Bloomberg report dates the first Daikin AC off an Indian production line to 2009.
Jawa gave Business Today a sense of the scale of the change: Daikin sold about 30,000 room ACs in 2010 and some 1.2 million in 2023. By 2024 ICRA described the brand as having good brand recall, particularly in room AC and VRV, and as the market leader in VRV. The Ivey summary adds that Daikin India reached US$1 billion in turnover in March 2023.
Strategic Objective
The documented objectives are volume, revenue, localisation and export targets, as stated by company executives:
Jawa said the company was targeting 2 million room ACs in 2024 and revenue of US$2 billion in FY2025.
Jawa described a mandate of 5 million units by 2030, comprising 4 million for the domestic market and 1 million for export.
Daikin aims to export to 100 countries across Africa, the Middle East and South America by March 2026, according to Jawa.
At the Sri City inauguration, Daikin Industries' CEO predicted India's AC business would triple by 2030 and said she hoped Daikin would hold the largest possible share.
Analytical reading: The stated objectives are scale-oriented. Any premium dimension has to be inferred from how Daikin pursues them, which the following sections examine.
Campaign Architecture & Execution
Daikin's documented execution is less a single campaign than three parallel commitments: manufacturing depth, a tiered product range, and regionally extended communication.
Manufacturing and localisation. ICRA reports that the Neemrana plant has installed capacity of 1.5 million room ACs. Once Sri City is fully operational, total capacity will be 3.0 million room ACs (2.0 million operational at the time of the report) and 2.8 million compressors. The same report cites a capex plan of about Rs 1,400 crore for FY2025–FY2027, a government PLI scheme benefit of Rs 538.7 crore, and a Rs 600 crore equity infusion from the parent in June 2024. The Sri City plant was inaugurated on 23 November 2023 on 75.5 acres, employing 3,000 people. Reported investment figures differ by source: The Hans India reports approximately Rs 1,000 crore, while Business Today reports Rs 1,700 crore. In 2026, Daikin and Taiwan's Rechi began construction of a Rs 547 crore rotary compressor plant at Sri City, with Phase I capacity of 2 million compressors, scalable to 9 million.
Jawa framed the rationale in PTI-reported comments: Chinese products had saturated the Indian RAC market, and Daikin responded by building its own production and R&D.
Product tiering. Daikin India's website labels a group of its inverter split models, such as the FTKM and ATKL series, as "Premium Series", alongside other inverter models. No verified public information is available on the share of residential sales by tier or on price-band strategy.
Communication. Three initiatives are documented:
In April 2021 Daikin introduced the tagline "Innovating For Change". Its first extensive campaign under the tagline ran in eight Indian languages besides English, including Hindi, Malayalam, Marathi, Bangla, Telugu and Kannada, conceptualised and executed by Magnon Designory.
In April 2023 Daikin ran an out-of-home campaign across major airports, at baggage claim, security checkpoints and departure gates.
In 2020 Daikin India invited digital agencies to manage its presence across websites, social media, review sites and e-commerce channels.
5. Positioning & Consumer Insight
Three documented elements shape Daikin's positioning.
First, technology credibility from the parent. ICRA notes that technology transfer and technical support from Daikin Industries give DAIPL an edge over competitors in new technology and product launches. Daikin's global scale supports this: the parent's CEO described 100 production units globally and customers in 170 countries.
Second, the stated consumer insight. The company attributed its 2021 vernacular approach to exponential growth in Tier 2 and Tier 3 demand, driven by "next billion consumers" with cheaper internet access, accelerated by the pandemic. Jawa's separate observation that buyers want value for money (Section 1) is a second stated insight.
Third, the limits of price power. ICRA states that DAIPL's ability to pass on large price increases in a competitive market is limited, which was reflected in a decline in operating margin in FY2022 and FY2023, though the company hiked prices across categories over the preceding 2–3 years.
Analytical reading: The documented evidence places Daikin's premium claim on engineering heritage, Japanese parentage, in-house component manufacturing and a labelled premium product range, rather than on any disclosed price premium. The Tier 2/3 vernacular push shows Daikin extending the same brand into new geographies and languages.
Media & Channel Strategy
Distribution. ICRA reports that DAIPL has over 14,700 sales and distribution touch points. Most revenue comes through dealers and distributors, followed by regional and national retail chains, Daikin Solution Plazas, e-commerce platforms, and AC and consumer durable dealers.
Media. Jawa described the 2021 effort as covering print, outdoor and digital, in the belief that India's diversity calls for 360-degree communication. Landing pages for the campaign were built in multiple Indic languages. The same trade report says Magnon has been Daikin's digital agency partner for almost two decades. For the 2023 airport campaign, the agency, Osmo, said its machine-learning model identified the most favourable touchpoints. That is an agency claim and was not independently verified. Exchange4media reported the campaign's stated objective as strengthening Daikin's position as the global leader in air conditioning.
Business & Brand Outcomes
Volume. Room AC sales grew from roughly 30,000 units in 2010 to some 1.2 million in 2023 (Business Today, quoting Jawa). Bloomberg reported Daikin selling about 700,000 units in India in the quarter to June 2024, up about 40% year on year in local-currency terms.
Financials. ICRA's rationale reports consolidated operating income of Rs 4,834.7 crore (FY2022), Rs 6,815.0 crore (FY2023) and Rs 8,178.2 crore (FY2024, provisional). PAT was Rs 231.0, 306.2 and 308.0 crore, with operating profit margins of 9.5%, 8.1% and 9.2% respectively.
Position. ICRA states that DAIPL remains the VRV market leader and maintains a healthy and increasing market share in inverter room ACs. It gives no numerical share. A brokerage channel check cited by Business Standard in April 2024 reported that Voltas had gained the most market share after Daikin in the room AC market.
Credit standing. ICRA reaffirmed Daikin India's [ICRA]AAA (Stable) rating in July 2024.
Strategic Implications
Premium is built upstream. The documented investments are in plants, compressors and R&D, not in a visible price-led or celebrity-led campaign. In this reading, brand premium is treated as a supply-chain and technology asset. ICRA ties this directly to risk: DAIPL imports 35–40% of its raw material needs, mostly from group companies, hedges 90–95% of forex exposure, and is investing to reduce import dependence.
Scale and premium pull in different directions. A 4 million domestic-unit ambition against a category where the largest rival already sells over 2 million units implies a broader customer base than a pure premium niche. The documented bridge is language and geography (vernacular communication into Tier 2/3), not a separate brand. Whether premium perception holds as volumes grow is not answerable from public information.
Margin evidence is mixed. Revenue growth of about 43% in FY2023 and about 20% in FY2024 (ICRA) was accompanied by operating margins of 8.1–9.5%. ICRA expects margins to remain range-bound. Public financials do not by themselves demonstrate a margin premium.
Execution dependency. ICRA identifies timely commencement of commercial production and realising backward-integration benefits as crucial to sustaining revenue growth. The parent's financial support is likewise a documented underpinning of the strategy, and ICRA lists deterioration in parent linkages as a rating risk.
Discussion Questions
Daikin's documented investments emphasise manufacturing and technology over price-led communication. Under what conditions can a premium brand be built primarily through supply-chain and engineering assets, and what must communication add?
Daikin extended the same brand into eight languages for Tier 2/3 markets rather than launching a separate value brand. Evaluate the trade-offs against a dual-brand architecture, using only the evidence in this case.
ICRA notes limited ability to pass on large price increases despite the brand's standing. What does this imply about the difference between brand strength and pricing power?
Daikin's stated 2030 ambition is 5 million units, including 4 million domestic. How should a premium brand define success when volume targets approach those of mass-market incumbents? What metrics would you require that are not publicly available?
Much of the premium case rests on parent-company technology and financial support. How does dependence on a global parent shape the strategic freedom, risks and credibility of a local brand?
