From Two Giants to One “We”: The Story of Vi (Vodafone Idea)
Before 2020, Indian mobile users knew two telecom names well: Vodafone and Idea. In 2018, Vodafone India and Idea Cellular merged to form Vodafone Idea Limited, becoming one of the country’s major telecom operators. For the next two years, the company ran two separate consumer brands while it worked on the less visible task of joining two large networks, two sets of people and two sets of processes.
Then, in September 2020, the two brands became one.

7 September 2020: Vi Is Born
On 7 September 2020, Vodafone Idea held a virtual launch to unveil its unified consumer brand, Vi. The name is read as “We”, a simple word chosen to signal that two familiar brands had come together. The brand carried the line “Together For Tomorrow.”
Ravinder Takkar, then MD and CEO of Vodafone Idea, said the launch signalled the company’s desire to delight customers, stakeholders, communities and employees, and its commitment to being a “Champion for Digital India.” Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman of the Aditya Birla Group and of Vodafone Idea, said the brand stood committed to partnering with the Government to accelerate India’s progression towards a digital economy.
The company also said the new identity was meant to carry forward the legacy of both brands while adding a dynamic edge for changing times and evolving consumer needs.
A Logo With a Spark
Vi’s visual identity is distinctive. The “i” in the logo carries a bold mustard-coloured dot. The strong colour was meant to feel fresh and to hold a promise for the future of the brand.
Behind the logo was a larger shift. Vodafone and Idea stores were rebranded as Vi, and customers could use the Vi app with their existing Vodafone or Idea numbers. The app also introduced a friendly assistant named Vic, and customers could manage their accounts over WhatsApp too.
Making the Launch Playful
A rebrand can feel like a corporate announcement. Vi tried to make it feel like an invitation.
To mark the launch, the company started Happy Surprises, a programme inviting people to spot the new Vi logo and win daily prizes. It also launched an app that let users create and download their own customised Vi Tune. Both were open to Vi and non-Vi customers alike.
A Tough Arena
Vi stepped into a fiercely competitive market, taking on Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel. The brand arrived at a time when Vodafone Idea was looking to rediscover itself and attract new subscribers. Choosing a fresh name and look was part of that effort.
The Marketing Strategy: Solving One Everyday Worry
Vi’s most talked-about marketing move was built around a problem almost every prepaid user knows: running out of data at the worst moment.
The answer was Vi Hero Unlimited, a set of prepaid plans built around three headline benefits:
Weekend Data Rollover: unused daily data from weekdays can be used over the weekend.
Night-time free data: unlimited high-speed data from 12 am to 6 am, which the plans call “Binge All Night.”
Double Data: offered on higher-value recharges in the plans’ early rollout.
The plans were later joined by Data Delight, which offers up to 2GB of extra backup data each month at no additional cost. Many Hero Unlimited plans also include access to Vi Movies & TV.
The Campaign That Told the Story
In 2021, Vi promoted the plans through a campaign created with Ogilvy, titled “Sirf naam ka nahin, kaam ka unlimited,” which roughly means “unlimited not just in name, but in what it does.” It starred actor Vinay Pathak, who explained the plan’s benefits in a conversational, relatable style.
Vi’s Chief Marketing Officer at the time, Avneesh Khosla, said the company wanted to highlight the concerns most prepaid customers face when they run out of data, and to position Hero Unlimited as the “hero product” for 4G prepaid users. The creative team said the task was to differentiate the plan by focusing on two relatable pain points: running out of data in the middle of the night and over the weekend.
The campaign ran across TV, digital and outdoor media, backed by on-ground activations.
What Makes Vi’s Approach Unique
Looking at the brand’s journey, a few threads stand out:
A name with meaning. “Vi,” read as “We,” turned a merger into a message of togetherness.
Legacy plus a fresh start. The brand deliberately kept the heritage of Vodafone and Idea while giving customers a new identity.
Product-led storytelling. Instead of only talking about network size, Vi built campaigns around specific benefits, such as weekend rollover and free night-time data, that answer everyday frustrations.
Familiar faces and simple language. Using a popular actor and a plain-spoken message made a technical offering easy to understand.
Digital convenience. The app, Vic and WhatsApp support made the brand easy to reach.
The Story Continues
Vi’s story is about something harder than launching a brand from scratch: bringing two well-known names together under one identity without losing what people already knew and trusted. It is still being written, in a market where every customer is choosing, again and again, who to stay connected with.
For Vi, that choice begins with a simple word: We.
