OWND!: How India's Biggest Fashion House Built a Brand Gen Z Would Actually Call Their Own

Every big fashion conglomerate eventually runs into the same problem: the customer who grew up with their stores has grown up, and a new one has arrived who doesn't recognise the brand at all. Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Limited, the company behind Pantaloons and a long list of well-known Indian fashion labels, faced exactly that problem with India's Gen Z. Their answer arrived on September 16, 2025, wearing an exclamation mark: OWND!

A Brand Built to Talk Like Its Audience
OWND! wasn't dreamed up as an experiment on the side. It came from ABFRL with real intent, a completely new brand name, a new visual identity, and store layouts designed from scratch rather than borrowed from an existing format. Sangeeta Tanwani, CEO of Pantaloons and OWND!, described the thinking behind it plainly: young consumers were no longer just shopping, they were shaping the culture around them, and ABFRL wanted a brand built specifically to be part of that shift rather than watching it from the outside.
Instead of trying to stretch an existing brand younger, ABFRL made the harder choice, building something new from the ground up, with its own name, its own tone of voice, and its own reason to exist.
From StyleUp to OWND!
The rollout had a practical backbone. ABFRL didn't start from zero on real estate. It took its existing StyleUp stores and began converting them into OWND! outlets, with a clear target of reaching 100 stores by the end of FY26. This let the brand scale quickly across cities without the slow grind of finding fresh retail space from scratch.
The first standalone OWND! store opened in Kalyan Nagar, Bangalore, spread across 9,696 square feet over multiple levels. It was designed as a high-street shopping experience rather than a traditional department store, open layouts, playful visual merchandising, and an interior built to feel less like a shop and more like a hangout spot. From there, the brand kept expanding into other cities, including a store at Pacific Mall in Dwarka, New Delhi.
Today, OWND! operates more than 85 physical stores across the country, alongside its own online store at ownd.in, offering dispatch within 24 hours, seven-day returns, and cash on delivery across India. This combination, real stores you can walk into plus a direct-to-consumer website built for how young shoppers actually browse, is central to how the brand operates.
What's Actually On the Rack
OWND! didn't position itself as a niche or premium label. The brand launched with more than 10,000 styles across menswear, womenswear, kidswear, and accessories, with prices starting at just Rs 399. The idea was to make trend-led fashion, hoodies, denim, lounge sets, smart-casual pieces that work from a lecture hall to a night out, accessible rather than aspirational in price, while still feeling current in design.
Speaking Gen Z's Language, On Purpose
Where OWND!'s marketing gets genuinely interesting is in how deliberately it avoids sounding like a big corporate fashion house. The brand describes itself as being "built from day one for young India," explicitly positioning itself as not adapted and not watered down from something else, a pointed way of distancing itself from its own parent company's legacy image.
Its messaging leans hard into first-person, unfiltered youth language: phrases like "no disconnect, no corporate filter," and a tagline that simply reads "Bring The Hype. Own Every Fit." Instead of talking about garments, OWND! talks about drops, feeds, vibes, and creators, the vocabulary its Gen Z audience already uses every day on social media. The brand frames its collections as reflecting what's "blowing up" on customers' feeds and what their favourite creators are wearing, positioning itself as a mirror of youth culture rather than a company trying to sell into it.
This is also reflected in the brand name itself. "OWND!" plays on the word "owned," built around the core idea of self-expression, encouraging young shoppers to "own every moment" with confidence rather than simply buying an outfit. It's a small piece of wordplay, but it turns a purchase into a statement of identity, which is a much stickier idea for a Gen Z audience than a simple value proposition.
An Omnichannel Bet, Not Just a Digital One
Unlike many Gen Z-focused fashion brands that launch purely online and add stores later, OWND! moved in the opposite direction, opening large, experience-led physical stores from day one, while building ownd.in as a full digital shopping destination in parallel. This dual approach lets the brand offer instant gratification, walking in, trying on, walking out with something, alongside the convenience of browsing and ordering online with fast delivery and cash on delivery, meeting young shoppers wherever they prefer to shop, rather than betting everything on one channel.
Why This Story Matters to Marketers
OWND!'s launch is a useful case study in how a large, established fashion house can credibly enter a demographic it doesn't naturally belong to. Rather than repackaging an old brand with younger models and brighter colours, ABFRL built a completely separate identity, language, and store experience, one that could stand on its own without carrying the baggage of the parent company's image.
It also shows how quickly scale can be achieved when a new brand is backed by existing retail infrastructure, converting StyleUp stores gave OWND! a fast path to a wide footprint, something an independent Gen Z startup brand would take years to build from scratch.
For a generation raised on scrolling feeds and short attention spans, OWND! is betting that the brands that will win aren't the ones that talk about being trendy, but the ones that sound, look, and move like the culture itself. Whether that bet fully pays off is still being written, one store opening and one online drop at a time.
